Alex Shpigel, L.Ac.
“I have never pursued health hoping for immortality, no, good health is about being able to fully enjoy the time we do have. It is about being as functional as possible throughout our entire lives and avoiding crippling, painful and lengthy battles with disease. There are many better ways to die and to live. “
This quote by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D who is a professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University from his book The China Study very eloquently describes the approach I take to health at . Many patients come to my clinic seeking help with pain, dysfunction or other symptoms. My main focus is to get rid of the symptoms but also find the underlying cause so the symptoms do not return. The goal is to provide you with the knowledge and tools to not only regain your health but also maintain your body at optimal levels. We do not want to avoid disease, because then you are constantly looking for symptoms. Rather we want to pursue optimal health and live life to its fullest.
Alex Shpigel has been practicing acupuncture for over 9 years on both the east and west coasts. While attending the University of California San Diego, he sustained an injury while training for a mixed martial arts competition. After a visit to the doctor, his only option was pain medication and rehab with no use of the arm for several weeks. He was training for a fight in under a month and rest was not an option. He took the advice to try acupuncture and went on to take first place at the World Kuoshu competition in Taiwan. The results he saw led him to follow the path of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Holistic health. After getting his B.S. at UCSD he went on to get his Masters in TCM at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Alex attended both the San Diego and New York campuses to get a deeper understanding of the medicine and work with a wide variety of patients. After 3 years of practice focusing on pain and Orthopedic dysfunctions, he moved back to San Diego to continue his practice.
Alex first got introduced to Chinese Medicine from his Kung Fu teacher Shrfu Mike Patterson at the Hsing-I Institute in San Diego, Ca. He began his study of the Taoist arts of Hsing-I, Pa-Kua and Tai Chi when he was 14 and continues his training today. During his training he was exposed to many uses of herbs and tui na (Chinese medical massage) by his teacher. These have been used by martial arts schools and teachers for generations to maintain student health and keep them injury free.
This passion for the Martial Arts and health still holds true today and because of this background, Alex has specialized in pain and Orthopedic disorders. Alex has gone on to do further study and received his Diplomat in Acupuncture Orthopedics from Cedar Sinai in Los Angeles and regularly attends classes to study the latest most innovative and effective methods to help his patients.
